PT Palapa Timur Telematika (PTT), the National Strategic Project Implementing Agency (NPC) for the construction of fiber optic backbone telecommunications infrastructure in Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, and six provinces in Papua, collaborated with Google, Telkomsel, and a Papuan special staff member, Ka Billy Mambrasar, to conduct a sharing session, which involved practicing the use of fiber optic technology tools, such as an OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), an OPM (Optical Power Meter), and a splicer.
This training session was held at vocational schools and universities specializing in telecommunications infrastructure and networks. The program was titled "Eastern Indonesia Telecommunications Synergy." PTT was the backbone network owner, Telkomsel was the provider, and Google was the network user. This activity was held online on November 13th in Manokwari-Bintuni, in collaboration with SMKN 2 Manokwari, STMIK Manokwari, and SMKN 1 Bintuni. A total of 350 enthusiastic participants participated in the event. The Head of the Manokwari Education Office, Martinus Dowansiba, attended and opened the event.
Widodo Yuli Prasetyo, PTT's Support Operations and the event organizer, stated that PTT hopes this activity and program will provide long-term benefits, particularly in telecommunications. "We hope that students, especially those from the region, can contribute to the advancement of their respective regions," he said in a press release on Wednesday (November 30, 2023). Widodo stated that the program was not limited to discussions; his team also held practical sessions introducing OTDRs, Optical Power Meters, and Splicers from PT Palapa Timur Telematika, as well as practical sessions introducing Radio Frequency from Telkomsel.
This sharing session introduced students to fiber optics, which could then be followed by internships at the Palapa Timur Telematika company. During this internship, students could be selected to work at PTT. In addition to educating them about the importance of the East Palapa Ring network, this program also serves as a way for PTT to directly contribute to community development in the education sector. "PTT prioritizes competent local talent to contribute directly to the maintenance of the East Palapa Ring network, fostering a sense of belonging and working together to maintain and develop the existing telecommunications infrastructure," Widodo said.
The principal of SMKN 1 Bintuni, Eko Hadi, stated that this opportunity provided students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and gain practical experience using ever-evolving telecommunications equipment. "Thank you to PT Palapa Timur Telematika for organizing this activity, inviting Telkomsel and Google to share knowledge about telecommunications technology," he said. During this sharing session, PTT presented material on fiber optics, the telecommunications technology used in the East Palapa Ring project. Telkomsel explained the BTS technology they use in Papua. Google presented material on positive internet use through the YouTube app, along with an explanation of belajar.id by Dzulfikar, a representative from Google for Education.
