BAKTI Strengthens Internet Access in NTT

East Flores (IndoTelko) | June 30, 2020
The Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) is strengthening the presence of internet access points in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.

"BAKTI in NTT has built 753 internet access points, which are free internet access points directly connected by satellite," said Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate in his remarks at the internet access inauguration ceremony held at the Woloklibang Village Office, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, last Friday (June 26).

He revealed that in East Flores Regency, there are 38 internet access points directly connected by satellite, both domestic and from other countries. Of the total 7,764 internet access points throughout Indonesia, 753 are installed in nearly 20 regencies in NTT Province. In addition to internet access, 133 locations in East Nusa Tenggara Province have also installed Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and 5 Palapa Ring Networking Operations Centers.

Currently, Indonesia uses 9 satellites, 5 of which are Indonesian and 4 from other countries, to meet the needs of the community.

According to him, the available satellites are not sufficient, so much work remains. "For example, education in areas where fiber optic backbones have been installed by cellular operators can gain extensive internet access because of the fiber optic network," explained Minister Johnny.

Johnny hopes that the 58 internet access points in East Flores Regency directly connected to satellites, as well as the BTS (Base Transceiver Stations) built by BAKTI, can be utilized effectively. "We certainly hope that these available facilities can be utilized effectively, as they are provided for village offices, electronic-based government services, schools, and community health centers (Puskesmas) for health services," said the Minister of Communication and Information.

The overall development of ICT infrastructure in the 3T regions, including fiber optic, microwave links, and satellite, will be fully available by 2023. "Hopefully, all of this can be used through online services," he added. (wn)
